Denmark is launching AltID digital wallet in spring 2026, complementing the highly successful MitID authentication system (87% weekly usage). Ranked #1 globally for digitalization by the UN, Denmark demonstrates how mature digital infrastructure enables smooth EUDI wallet deployment.

AltID: Denmark's EUDI Wallet Launching Spring 2026

Denmark's AltID app is set to be launched in spring 2026 as the country's digital ID wallet, allowing users to store credentials such as ID cards on their smartphones and perform age verification both online and in person.

The eIDAS 2.0-compliant platform is developed by digital ID services firm Nine, which won a $4.4 million contract from the Danish Agency for Digital Government in April 2024. The upcoming app is part of the EU's plan to provide each citizen with the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet.

Selective Disclosure and Privacy-Preserving Features

Privacy by design: While MitID confirms a person's identity to access services, AltID is designed to show only the specific details that are needed in a given situation - in practice, this could mean confirming that a user is over a certain age without revealing their full date of birth or address.

This selective disclosure capability demonstrates Denmark's commitment to privacy-preserving digital identity, a core principle of the EUDI wallet architecture. Users maintain control over which attributes they share in each transaction.

Complementing MitID, Not Replacing It

AltID will complement rather than replace MitID. The two systems serve different purposes: MitID for authentication (proving who you are), AltID for selective attribute disclosure (sharing only what's needed). This dual approach provides complete digital identity capabilities.

MitID: 87% Weekly Usage Among Adults

MitID, meaning "My Identity," was introduced in 2019 and officially launched in October 2021 as Denmark's new digital ID that replaced NemID for digital identification and authentication. MitID is every resident's personal key to digital services in Denmark, including self-service solutions provided by the public sector.

Remarkably, 87 percent of the Danish adult population uses MitID at least once a week. This extraordinary adoption rate demonstrates Denmark's digital-first culture and provides an established user base for AltID expansion.

The full transition period from NemID to MitID ran from October 2021 to June 2022. NemID ultimately stopped working at midnight on November 1, 2023, with 98 percent of citizens over age 15 having already migrated to MitID. This successful migration demonstrates Denmark's capability to execute large-scale digital identity transitions.

Mobile-First Architecture

MitID can be used for all the same scenarios where NemID was used, including online banking, e-commerce and accessing public services. Unlike NemID, MitID is first and foremost an app for smartphones and tablets, though alternatives include a MitID code display device that generates one-time codes for users without smartphones.

MitID is owned by Finans Denmark and the Danish Agency for Digital Government, representing a public-private partnership model. This governance structure ensures alignment between government requirements and financial sector needs.

Signicat Infrastructure Partnership

Signicat secured a contract with the Danish Agency for Digital Government to supply digital identity verification infrastructure for Denmark's EUDI Wallet and will continue its role as the technology provider for Denmark's existing mobile driving license application. This continuity ensures technical expertise and integration with established systems.

UN #1 Ranking: World's Top Government for Digitalization

Denmark ranked #1 in the U.N.'s bi-annual e-Government Survey from 2018-2024, and the UN recognized Denmark as the world's top government for digitalization in 2024. This sustained leadership over six years demonstrates consistent excellence rather than one-time achievement.

93% of Danish internet users used digital public services in 2021, the highest in the EU. This extraordinary usage rate shows that Denmark hasn't just built digital services — it has achieved universal adoption.

Digital Growth Strategy 2025

The Digital Growth Strategy 2025 contains 6 pillars and 38 concrete initiatives aimed at securing Denmark's position as an EU leading country in digital transformation. The Danish government allocated 134 million EUR to initiatives running until 2025.

The current Joint Government Digital Strategy runs from 2022 until 2025, addressing challenges such as labour shortage, climate change mitigation, and digital inclusion. This complete approach ensures digital identity fits within broader digital society objectives.

€1.07 Billion Digital Decade Roadmap

According to the Eurobarometer on the Digital Decade 2025, 81% of Danish citizens consider that the digitalisation of public and private services is making their lives easier. This strong citizen satisfaction demonstrates that Denmark's digital transformation delivers real value.

Denmark's roadmap is composed of 67 measures with a budget of EUR 1.07 billion, of which EUR 832 million come from public budgets. This substantial investment underpins complete digital transformation including EUDI wallet deployment.

Spring 2026 Launch Timeline

Under a new EU regulation on electronic identification and trust services, all EU member states are required to offer at least one EU Digital Identity Wallet to citizens, residents and businesses by the end of 2026. These wallets are meant to work across borders, allowing people to prove who they are and to store and share official documents securely throughout the EU.

Denmark's spring 2026 AltID launch timeline demonstrates confidence in meeting this deadline well ahead of the December cut-off. With AltID selective disclosure capabilities, MitID 87% weekly usage, 98% migration success, Signicat infrastructure partnership, UN #1 global ranking for digitalization, 93% digital public services usage (highest in EU), Digital Growth Strategy with €134M budget, €1.07B Digital Decade roadmap with 67 measures, and 81% citizen satisfaction, Denmark exemplifies how mature digital infrastructure enables smooth EUDI wallet deployment.
