Czech Republic launched the eDoklady digital ID app in January 2024, becoming one of nine EU countries with operational digital identity wallets ahead of the 2026 deadline. With 600,000 downloads and recent election testing using ISO 18013-5, Czechia demonstrates advanced EUDI wallet readiness.
eDoklady App Operational Since January 2024
The Czech mobile application eDoklady officially became operational as of Saturday, January 20, 2024, ushering in a new era of identity verification through electronic ID cards. Now accessible on Google Play and the App Store, this app allows Czech citizens to download their electronic ID to their smartphones, offering a convenient and secure alternative to traditional plastic cards.
Every citizen of the Czech Republic can download the eDoklady application and activate their ID card via the central Citizen's Internet Portal (Portál občana) at portalobcana.gov.cz. The app has achieved 600,000 downloads since January 2024 and is accepted at banks, post offices, insurers, polling stations, and municipalities across the country.
Production Deployment: Among First Nine EU Countries
Leading the way: Czech Republic is among nine countries that have a digital identity wallet solution deployed at national level: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Portugal. This positions Czechia well ahead of the December 2026 deadline.
Senate Election Testing with ISO 18013-5
In January 2026, the Czech government tested mobile ID verification in Senate elections (January 17-18) using the eDoklady app with ISO 18013-5 proximity flow. This real-world testing in electoral processes demonstrates the government's confidence in the security and reliability of the digital identity system for high-stakes civic participation.
The use of ISO 18013-5, the international standard for mobile driving licenses that has been adapted for digital identity credentials, shows Czech Republic's commitment to interoperable, standards-based digital identity infrastructure aligned with EUDI wallet technical specifications.
Czech ID Card (Občanský průkaz) Foundation
The Czech identity card (Občanský průkaz) is the official national identification document issued to Czech citizens, including an electronic chip, enabling secure digital authentication and electronic signatures. An identity card with machine-readable data and contact electronic chip is used for remote proof of identity.
Identity cards are issued with different validity periods based on age:
- Under 15 years: 5-year validity period
- Over 15 years: 10-year validity period
- Over 70 years: 35-year validity period
Cardholders can use the chip to generate qualified electronic signatures (QES) compliant with eIDAS regulations, widely used in government online services and digital document signing. This established infrastructure provides a secure foundation for eDoklady and EUDI wallet integration.
Portál občana: Central Citizen Portal
The Portál občana (Citizen Portal) at portalobcana.gov.cz provides the fastest way to manage documents and get necessary records from registers, and also conveniently send messages from the databox. The portal serves as the central hub for Czech citizens to interact with government services electronically.
Identita občana is the only way to establish an authorized connection to e-government services, providing the authentication backbone for secure access to digital government services. The main government portal at portal.gov.cz provides official information about identity card issuance and requirements.
€2.26 Billion Digital Roadmap Through 2024
Czechia's digital roadmap is composed of 58 measures with a total budget of €2.26 billion, equivalent to 0.71% of its GDP in 2024. This substantial investment supports the country's complete digital transformation including EUDI wallet deployment.
Public services are improving rapidly, particularly eHealth access and citizen-facing services. The government continues to digitalize its services, with E-government projects presenting opportunities for specialization in software development, cybersecurity, and digital transformation services.
Cybersecurity Act and AI Strategy
A draft Cybersecurity Act took effect early 2025, strengthening the country's cybersecurity framework. The Act expands the number of regulated entities from 400 to more than 6,000, ensuring strong security standards across a much wider range of digital services including EUDI wallet infrastructure.
The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Czech Republic 2030 was introduced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in July 2024, positioning the country to use AI in digital identity verification and fraud prevention.
High Citizen Satisfaction and Digital Inclusion
According to a 2025 Eurobarometer survey, 73% of Czech citizens consider that the digitalization of public and private services is making their lives easier. Digital inclusion is a strong point for Czechia, with widespread basic digital skills and minimal gender and rural-urban gaps.
In 2025, the largest research on digitization in Czechia to date was conducted, describing five main barriers to successful digital transformation and providing data to guide future improvements.
Looking Ahead to December 2026
With the eDoklady app operational since January 2024, 600,000 downloads achieved, wide acceptance at critical institutions, real-world election testing with ISO 18013-5, eIDAS-compliant qualified electronic signatures, strong Portál občana infrastructure, €2.26 billion digital investment, enhanced cybersecurity regulation, and 73% citizen satisfaction, Czech Republic has established complete EUDI wallet readiness.
In 2026, Prague will host the 11th anniversary international conference on Digital Czech Republic, focusing on how the country can continue to harness digital transformation. As one of nine EU countries with production digital identity wallets already deployed, Czech Republic demonstrates that the December 2026 EUDI wallet deadline is achievable with proper planning and early execution.
