EUDI Wallet How-To Guides

Last updated: 1/30/2026Reading time: 4 min

Step-by-step tutorials for using the EU Digital Identity Wallet. Each guide includes time estimates, difficulty levels, and troubleshooting help.

Getting Started Path

  1. 1. Download your country\'s EUDI Wallet app
  2. 2. Add your National ID Card (essential first step)
  3. 3. Add Driver\'s License and Health Insurance (if applicable)
  4. 4. Practice verifying identity online
  5. 5. Explore additional credentials (diplomas, etc.)

Prerequisites and Requirements

Device Requirements

iOS Devices: iPhone running iOS 15 or later with Face ID or Touch ID capability. 500MB free storage space. Active internet connection (WiFi or mobile data).

Android Devices: Android 10 or later (API level 26+) with fingerprint sensor or face unlock. 500MB free storage space. NFC capability required for ID card onboarding.

Network: Stable internet connection required for credential issuance and verification. VPN and proxy configurations may interfere with location-based checks.

First-Time Setup

Upon first launch, you will be presented with a welcome screen where you will be asked to create a 6-digit PIN for future logins. This PIN is required every time you access the wallet or share credentials.

After PIN creation, register biometric authentication (Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint) for faster access. To access the wallet, users undergo multi-factor authentication, which includes biometric verification and secure password protection.

The wallet uses device binding by default, meaning credentials are tied to your specific device for security. Backup and restore functions enable migration to new devices.

Platform-Specific Instructions

Android Setup

Download: EUDI Wallet apps are available from Google Play Store. Ensure you download the official app from your national government (e.g., "ID-Wallet" for Germany, "France Identité" for France).

NFC Setup: Enable NFC in Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → NFC → Toggle ON. NFC is required for reading ID card chips during onboarding.

Biometric Setup: Register fingerprint in Settings → Security → Fingerprint. Ensure sensor is clean and dry for reliable authentication.

Permissions: Grant camera (for document scanning), storage (for credential storage), and network (for verification) permissions when prompted during setup.

iOS Setup

Download: EUDI Wallet apps are available from Apple App Store. Download the official app from your national government.

Face ID/Touch ID: Enable in Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Toggle on "Wallet & Apple Pay". This allows biometric authentication for credential access.

NFC: NFC is enabled by default on iPhone 7 and later models. No additional configuration required for ID card scanning.

Storage: Check available storage in Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Ensure at least 500MB free space for credential storage and app functionality.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping ID Card First: National ID card must be added before other credentials. It establishes your identity foundation (PID - Person Identification Data).
  • Poor NFC Positioning: Remove phone case, place ID card flat on phone back (center), keep still for 5+ seconds. Metal cases block NFC signals.
  • Expired Documents: Verify document validity dates before attempting to add them. Expired documents will fail verification.
  • Blurry Photos: Use good lighting, keep device steady, ensure focus locks before capturing document images. Blurry or cropped photos cause verification failures.
  • Forgetting PIN: Write down your 6-digit PIN in a secure location. PIN reset requires full wallet reset and credential re-issuance.
  • No Backup Before Device Change: Enable backup before switching devices. Without backup, credentials must be re-issued from scratch.
  • Sharing Too Many Attributes: Review selective disclosure settings carefully. Only share minimum required attributes with relying parties.

Security Best Practices

Selective Disclosure: EUDI Wallet uses selective disclosure - you control which attributes are shared. Always review the relying party\'s request before confirming. For example, age verification only requires proof you\'re over 18, not your exact birthdate.

Transaction History: Check transaction history regularly to see what was shared and with whom. Revoke permissions for apps no longer needed.

Multi-Factor Authentication: Keep both PIN and biometric authentication enabled. Never share your PIN with anyone, including support staff.

Device Security: Enable device lock screen (separate from wallet PIN). Keep operating system and wallet app updated to latest versions for security patches.

Lost/Stolen Device: Immediately revoke credentials through your national EUDI Wallet provider\'s website or helpline. Device binding prevents unauthorized access, but revocation adds extra protection.

Guide Categories

Essential Credentials (Start Here)

ID Card: Foundation credential required before adding others. Uses NFC to read chip data, establishing Person Identification Data (PID) with government-verified attributes.

Driver\'s License: Mobile Driving License (mDL) following ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard. Enables digital presentation to law enforcement during traffic stops.

Health Insurance: European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) credential for cross-border healthcare access. Required for medical services in other EU countries.

Educational & Professional

Diplomas: University degree certificates issued as QEAA (Qualified Electronic Attestations of Attributes). Requires verification through issuing university portal (10 minutes).

Vaccination Certificates: COVID-19 or general vaccination records from healthcare providers. Uses same infrastructure as EU Digital COVID Certificate.

Identity Operations

Verify Identity Online: Present credentials to relying parties (websites, apps) for age verification, identity confirmation, or attribute sharing. Takes 30 seconds per transaction.

Share Credentials In-Person: Generate QR code for in-person verification (retail age checks, event entry). Relying party scans code to verify attributes. Takes 15 seconds.

Update Address: Refresh address credential after moving. Requires government verification through population register or municipality portal (5 minutes).

Maintenance & Recovery

Revoke Credential: Emergency revocation for lost or stolen devices. Immediately invalidates credentials to prevent unauthorized use. Contact national provider helpline (2 minutes).

Export and Backup: Cloud backup of credential list, attributes, and configurations. Enables restoration to new device without re-issuing credentials. Setup takes 10 minutes, automatic thereafter.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

NFC Not Reading: Remove phone case, place ID card flat on back of phone (center), keep still for 5+ seconds. Try different positions if initial attempts fail.

Biometric Fails: Re-register biometric in device settings (Settings → Face ID / Fingerprint → Remove → Re-add). Use PIN as backup.

Verification Failed: Ensure document is not expired, retake photo in good lighting, show complete document (all four corners visible), avoid glare or shadows.

App Crashes: Force close app, clear app cache, restart phone. If persists, uninstall and reinstall (credentials are cloud-backed up if backup enabled).
